Introduction of the National Minimum Wage Essay - 1375 Words

Introduction of the National Minimum Wage (Essay Sample) Content: BRITAINà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬S NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGEName:Professor:Institution:Course:Date:Introduction of the National Minimum Wage (NMW) in BritainPrior to 1998, the United Kingdom did not have a national minimum wage control. Particular industries had implemented systems that were used to control wages under the Trade Boards Act 1909, minimum wage floors, and the Wages Councils, which operated from the start of the century up to their abolition in 1993 (TEMPEL, 2001).ÂThis period had witnessed declined trade union membership that contributed to weakened bargaining power thus making the employees very susceptible to low pay and unfair treatment. In support of the minimum wage, the Labour Party passed a conference motion in 1985 and to prove their commitment to the minimum wage they included it in their manifesto in 1992. This proved a hard idea to sell with the conservative party watering the policy down with the claims of loss of employment to the workers. These show off attracted various scholars who wanted to research and establish the correlation between the National Minimum Wage (NMW) and unemployment. Most of these researchers established that negligible impact of NMW on employment highly favouring the Labour Party (WILLIAMS, 2014)In 1995, the labour party made a significant leap towards establishing the NMW by committing to create the Low Pay Commission (LPC) which would consist of the three employers, three labour and three independents representatives who would set the NMW after the elections.During the 1997 elections campaign, the Labour Party made the National Minimum Wage its flagship policy. After the landslide victory in 1997, the labour party set the ball rolling and the Low Pay Commission(LPC) withÂGeorge BainÂas the chairman (WILLIAMS ADAM-SMITH, 2009)The policy was drafted and passed into law under the National Minimum WageAct (1998) which took effect on 1stApril 1999 with the Low Pay Commission (LPC) setting the adult hourl y rate at  £3.60.The NMW rates are usually reviewed on October of each year by the Low Pay Commission (LPC). The LPCthen makes recommendations for implementation to the Government.During the introduction of the NMW, it was projected that in the long-run its enactment would help eradicate the problem of poverty pay resulting to a living wage. The poverty pay exists when the earnings from paid work fail to push people out of poverty. In the UK, the NMW rate per hour depends on age, and whether one is an apprentice - to qualify for a NMW one must be at least school leaving age.(WILLIAMS, 2014)Below NMW for the past 5years.Year 21 and over 18 to 20 Under 18 Apprentice(aged 16 to 18 and those aged 19 or over that are in their first year) 2014(current)  £6.50  £5.13  £3.79  £2.73 2013  £6.31  £5.03  £3.72  £2.68 2012  £6.19  £4.98  £3.68  £2.65 2011  £6.08  £4.98  £3.68  £ 2.60 2010  £5.93  £4.92  £3.64  £2.50 Fig.1. Table illustrating the changes in NMW over the last 5 years (Gov, 2015).Impact of the National Minimum Wage (NMW) in BritainPaul Gregg observed that NMW can only have limited the impact on countries poverty levels because the poorest are not at work at all in the first place. Thus looking at an individual perspective, a raise in wages results in the improvement in the living standards and thus one moves from poverty pay (TEMPEL, 2001).NMW has also had a significant impact on reducing the gender pay gap. This is because the majority of people who were being paid below the set NMW were women who were employed on a part-time basis. The NMW has contributed to a convergence of the earnings of low-paid men and low paid women. However, the gap between men and women in the highest paid category has remained stubbornly wide (GREAT BRITAIN. 2011)According to the a survey conducting by the Low Pay Commission after the int roduction of the NMW in 1998, there was no evidence of reduced employment and hours reduction nor any effect on home closures. According to the survey, the industries usually take the "bite" through reduced profits or a translation of increase in prices of goods. However, no research has conclusively pointed out the relationship between a rise in NMW and raise in prices. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s however argued that the minimum wage can only rise to a certain level beyond which a further increase would result in unemployment (WALTMAN, 2008).ÂAccording to the LPC survey, the culmination of the NMW has a significant effect on the wage distribution thus reducing wage inequality. NMW has proved to be a very useful tool for income redistribution when used with other government intervention measures(DIBBEN, KLERCK WOOD, 2011)Observations made from earlier research about the impact of minimum wages on youth employment indicated that in cases of an adverse effect of a rise in minimum wage, the yo ung people are more vulnerable than adults. In this regard, the LPC was a little bit cautious when handling youth rates to an extent that Minimum Wage varied by age with the younger workers having a lower NMW (TEMPEL, 2001).ÂTo what extent did the introduction of NMW point to a significant shift in the British model of employment relations? The creation of the NMW has lead to a total change in the...

Julie Taymore´s Film Interpretation of The Tempest by...

â€Å"My View of The Tempest† William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, one of Shakespeare’s final plays and debat-ably his final play ever written, focused on man’s gluttonous desire for power. Power manifests itself in â€Å"The Tempest† in many different ways, including the exploration of the power of betrayal, the universal desire for power between men. The power of a mas-ter over his slave, and the power of magic and illusion. Although this is clear, many in-terpretations over time have changed regarding the theme of power, which has resulted in questions as to whether power in the play is represented as good or bad. Shakespeare pre-sents these forms of power in different ways. Namely, through his character Prospero, who was once the duke of Milan†¦show more content†¦But looking at Shakespeare work females did play both supporting and central characters. Is this answer the question that Shakespeare might have considered the idea that Julie Taymore used for her interpre-tation o f â€Å"The Tempest† I think that the switch of roles from the original play in the mov-ie makes a big difference in my view. Reading the original piece I get the imagination of every character other then Miranda and Aerial being a self-center manipulative mescaline male egger for power or control of another. Looking back at the Renaissance era you wouldn’t find any female in power or playing a major role in society that for me was one of the reasons why I couldn’t picture the switch of Prospero to Prospera. You look at the battle for power throughout the whole play and Prospero being Prospera a woman takes away from what I think Shakespeare intended to make a strong masculine. The changing of gender made a big difference to me view. The plot of the play and what the characters all wanted was power, which is more of a masculine idea. One thing I’d like to make clear before I get into reasons of why the changing of roles made a difference to me, my views s hould not be proceeded as a sexist but jus the idea that Prospero seemed more strong to me in the as a male then Prospera the female and will state my reasons why. Human Sexuality Paper free essay sample

When I was assigned this paper, I wanted to choose a paraphilia that I misunderstood the most. People who have sexual sadism disorder have frequent fantasies about sexual arousal results from inflicting psychological or physical suffering on a sexual partner, even humiliation and pain. This isn’t just a common act of rough sex. In the worst cases sexual sadism involves rape, torture, and even murder, the death of the victim produces sexual excitement. People who take their sexual addiction to these levels need psychiatric help or to be jailed. The arousal for these people is the terror in which they see in their victims. However, not all cases of sadism are so serious. Some are also people who do not torture so bad. This is known as sadomasochism. With this disorder, people are incredibly aroused by being tied up by their partner. Many normal couples use spanking, tying up, and a bit of force for fore play. We will write a custom essay sample on Human Sexuality Paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page This is not to be mistaken with sadism.. This is actually very common and kind of a fad now. There are sex stores that sell the type of products for this type of foreplay such as collars, whips, and all types of toys. There are a number of psychological theories about sadism. Most are based off of cases studies. Freud had two different views on the sadism. First he thought that aggressiveness with sexuality was urges. But he also thought that early in life children may have witnessed a sexual act or sex of their parents when they were just children. There were also psychologists that though that children developed sadism when their caretakers bring sexual pleasure and deny it when initiating toilet training or prevent asturbation. Psychologist sometimes believe that a person develops a psychological imprint during some earlier sexual experience at times.. Others believe that it is a slow process that relates back to when the individual becomes aroused and they then remember and reinforce it later in life during sex. A lot of men when asked are able to remember incidents in childhood or early adolescent that triggered them to become aroused. Treatment Someone with sexual sadism may never become known to the public, treatment or law enforcement. If people can limit their sexual sadism to istinct levels in a relationship, it is very controllable and not harmful if the partner is willing, which often can happen. For the ones who are brought to the attention of police officials the sadism has usually made itself into dangerous activity that have harmed others Conclusion In my thoughts, I feel that many and most people have sexual impulses that they are ashamed of. Most of which are not harmful, however, I do believe that individuals that are harmful to others need other resources and help with their condition to prevent the damage that is possible. Some hold in urges for so long that they are just simply uncontrollable in the heat of the moment. I feel any individual with these feelings need to seek counseling and try to pin point reasons and ways of subsiding their urges right off the bat. If the person affected is a serious danger to society then society needs to take serious measures to assure everyone’s safety. People who choose not to seek treatment could be just your average next door neighbor who looks and acts completely normal. And then suddenly one day they snap and become a danger to who ever is around them. This is concerning for everyone in society.
